Hill & Knowlton Launches Global Sustainability Manifesto
Press Release: July 2, 2008
- H&K commits to 20% reduction in carbon emissions by 2010*
- Global network will focus on energy efficiency, waste and transport policies
- 77% of the workforce already signed up to the Manifesto
Hill & Knowlton (H&K) today launched its Sustainability Manifesto which commits the global communications consultancy to achieve a 20% reduction in carbon emissions by 2010.
The Manifesto pulls together existing best practice and leanings from around the global network, together with the latest external standards on sustainability and guidance from its parent company, WPP.
Hill & Knowlton became carbon neutral in 2007 through an offsetting arrangement via WPP. The stated goal of its own Sustainability Manifesto is to reduce carbon emissions by adapting its energy efficiency, waste and transport policies.
Paul Taaffe, H&K Chairman and CEO, said; "The carbon footprint of the PR industry is relatively small compared to other sectors but we all have a responsibility to make sure we protect our future, and encourage our staff and clients to do the same."
Despite varying social and political attitudes towards climate change around the globe the Manifesto has been adopted by Hill & Knowlton's largest offices, representing 77% of its workforce, following a successful trial phase in the UK.
Taaffe continued; "Our largest offices are where we make the most impact so that is where we are rolling-out the manifesto first and I’ve been encouraged by the enthusiasm of our staff. We recognise however, that there is still a long way to go and the implementation of this initiative will be a constant learning process. In due course we hope the manifesto will be adopted by all our offices."
